The starting point of this work are the traditional stereotypes about black people that are still to be found in Central Europe and, via Europe, also in large parts of the USA. Due to the comprehensive socio-cultural changes of modernity and the resulting new perspectives of what is one's own and what is foreign, the previously stable ethno-characteristic images are currently beginning to become more and more dynamic. This is where the present study comes in, which is based on a broad qualitative investigation methodically committed to "grounded theory" and which, with its help, reveals new, previously hardly noticed patterns of interethnic perception. The special focus of the author, who herself comes from Uganda and has been living in Europe for a decade and a half, is the extremely broad spectrum of image-constructing factors and their respective consequences. This ranges from the former propaganda of pity by white missionaries for black "heathen children" to colonial or post-colonial exoticization to the aestheticization and idealization of the black body, for example in modern competitive sports and show business. In her explorations, the author repeatedly encounters the ambivalences in the changing perceptions of blacks by whites, which make an assessment of continuity and change difficult, but precisely for this reason also exciting.
