In the course of the so-called energy transition, biomass makes a significant contribution to both energetic and material use. However, in the past a number of problem areas have become apparent that are associated with the cultivation and use of renewable raw materials that has been practiced up to now. In particular, the cultivation of renewable raw materials, which is geared towards a small number of crops, is associated with negative effects on agriculture and the environment. The cultivation and use of other species and varieties could defuse this problem area. Against this background, an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approach was used to investigate the future role of Miscanthus x giganteus as a renewable raw material under sustainability criteria. For this purpose, various methodological approaches from different disciplines were applied and linked, and relevant stakeholders were included in the research process. An area potential analysis using a geographic information system (GIS) clarified under what conditions and to what extent Miscanthus x giganteus can be cultivated in Germany. Life cycle assessments showed which emissions of climate-impacting greenhouse gases, emissions with an acidifying effect and cumulative energy consumption are associated with different cultivation and use paths. By including relevant actors, further scientific as well as practical knowledge was taken into account and combined.
