Virtual learning and teaching using the example of the VIAMUS museum project

The focus of this work is the transfer of conventional learning and teaching models or common teaching methods from classroom teaching to the virtual area. In addition to the theoretical examination of this topic, which includes a closer look at the concept of virtuality, a possible form of such a transfer from conventional to virtual learning environments from practice is presented using a case study from the museum sector. The basis for this is the Virtual Museum of Antiquities in Göttingen (VIAMUS), which is based, so to speak, on the conventional didactic model of the learning exhibition or can be understood as a virtual counterpart to the "museum" as a place of learning. In addition to the presentation of the individual steps from planning to implementation to the completion of this website, the final evaluation of the same is also dealt with in detail in this work. Using a log file analysis carried out for this purpose and a supplementary online survey, it was not only possible to filter out the strengths and weaknesses of VIAMUS itself, but also to examine the acceptance of such a virtual teaching/learning offer on the part of its users, whereby there was a predominantly positive response here. All in all, important hints for the future development or further development and optimization of similar virtual teaching and learning offers for schools and universities can be derived from the planning, implementation and evaluation of the relevant learning environment on the net.

Author

Carmen Sohn was born in Kassel in 1973 and grew up in Hesse. She completed her master’s degree in education, journalism and economic and social psychology at the Georg-August University in Göttingen. As part of her subsequent scientific work at the Pedagogical Seminar at the University of Göttingen and her associated collaboration on the VIAMUS project, she wrote this dissertation to obtain the social science doctorate degree "Dr. disc. pol.". After the first professional positions as a teacher, she continued her education in the field of PR and media work, which is now her main focus.
