Doing top-class sport and studying at the same time involves a high personal risk and seems almost impossible under the current structures and conditions in Germany. An immense expenditure of time is necessary in order to be able to achieve top-class sporting successes and also achievements in a course of study. Since competitive sport is also practiced in a phase of life in which studying later professional success and social security are influenced by studying, many top athletes with an affinity for education decide in the phase between junior and senior level for a university degree and against a career in competitive sport. For top German sport there is a risk of losing some of the most talented top athletes at an early stage. Top student athletes who do not want to end their sport early are looking for innovative ways out of this situation. More and more people are opting for the USA as a way out. The American college system is a highly productive top-level sports support system that supports the study of top athletes through special support programs, but is currently struggling with problems, especially in commercial sports. After a structural and situational analysis of German elite sport, the present study identifies the strengths and weaknesses of the American university system using an innovative method triangulation (expert interviews with staff from the athletic departments and universities, survey of German student athletes in the USA) and these findings for approaches to a new funding system in Germany. Especially in the area of the different support options, this study provides new insights and shows that top German student athletes are competitive athletes with an affinity for education.
