In her work, the author first presented the essentials of the theory, empiricism and method of Maria Montessori and Emmi Pikler. In the practical part, she shows how these methods are used today, based on observations in a crèche and an interview with a kindergarten teacher. The work is therefore interesting for educators, but also for parents who have children in institutions that work according to Montessori and/or Pikler. In the final part, the connection is made between the theory and pedagogy of Montessori and Pikler and the results of more recent infant research: "The more recent research confirms Montessori and Pikler's image of the infant as an intelligent researcher and discoverer who perceives his environment holistically from birth, and it also shows that other scientists of the same time, such as Margret Mahler (1897-1985), René Spitz (1887-1974) or Jean Piaget (1896-1980), were wrong in various respects." Above all, personal competence and the endeavor to experience and expand this personal competence has turned out to be a very important drive or motivator from birth, according to recent infant research. This is in stark contrast to the image of the infant at the time, according to which it was symbiotic, passive or autistic. It is thanks to Montessori and Pikler that their theories and methods took this knowledge into account much earlier, i.e. almost a hundred years ago. With their observations and investigations and without the technical possibilities of today, they came to insights that are confirmed by more recent research.
