Even in the 21st century, depression is still a taboo subject, especially when it comes to male members of our society who are affected by this disease.
In the first part of this research work, the clinical picture of depression and its multifactorial, i.e. social, cognitive and psycho(pathological) conditions of origin will be shown on the basis of a specific case. The basis for this is the narrative interview, which was previously conducted with a 26-year-old young man and from which 38 biographical event data could ultimately be reconstructed. First, the family background of the biographer is examined, with the question: into which prevailing family structures is the biographer born? Then, with the help of hypotheses, in chronological order, hypotheses are formed for the individual life events. The biographical structure of the present case can be drawn from the so-called structural hypotheses, which crystallize in the further course of the analysis.
The second part of the work, based on the structural hypotheses, deals with selected aspects that relate to the topic of depression itself and theoretically underpin the results of the study. Both "external" and "internal" parameters are taken into account. External risk factors include parental psychopathologies, experiences of loss (separation/death), bullying and social isolation. In addition, internal factors such as a certain vulnerability, dysfunctional emotion regulation and negative cognitive thought structures, which lead to environmental influences being evaluated negatively, also seem to favor the development of depression.
