Fear of Islam is growing in the western world. What are the historical, political, sociocultural and religious perspectives underlying this sense of threat? In particular, the warning signs from Islamic fundamentalists and the failed integration policy of recent years are the subject of controversial discussion in the western world - especially in Germany. This book attempts to provide an answer by looking at developments in the Islamic world itself. This includes, on the one hand, Islamic fundamentalism and Al-Qaeda, but on the other hand also the importance of the Sharia. The theoretical foundations of important Islamic reformers are examined, as they are also expressed in the Muslim Brotherhood, the exclusion tendencies and absolute claims in the Koran as well as the position of women and the attitude towards other religions in Islam. The development can only be understood against the background of the Middle East conflict and the Afghan war, and it boils down to the question of the compatibility of Islam and human rights. The heated discussions make it essential to comprehensively explain important facts about the problematic phase of Islam and complex socio-political contexts. In order to deal with sensitive issues such as the compatibility of Islam with the Western understanding of human rights and gender equality in Islam objectively and adequately without polemics or simplifications, Klaus Behnam Shad chooses a culture-relativistic and differentiated Islam-critical one Approach.
